THIS WEEK: Some of you wrote her off. We wrote her off here. It was going to be a long time before Martina Hingis was top of the tree again. Well, it took just ten weeks for Hingis to recover from dropping to third, and reclaim the top spot on the SRI Rankings Top 50 Women. She did it by erasing last year's 6-4, 6-3 final loss to Venus Williams, and replacing it with a tight win over Davenport. The runner-up is still within reach, after gaining 40 points to Martina's 65.

The rest of Hingis's results at Zurich will show why she is clearly back in form. Last year she was taken to a tiebreak by Panova, a 7-5 set by Morariu, and three sets by Tauziat, before getting steamrolled by Venus. This year, she lost just 5 games to Dokic, 4 to the promising Myskina (up from 58 to 52, WTA #55), and only 5 to Capriati in the semi. She's back.

Did You Know? The most popular initials on the WTA Tour over the past 5 1/2 years are "M.M." Twenty-two women with those initials have played on the tour in that time; next best is "A.S." with 15. On the men's tour (and Challengers), A.M. leads with 19, with M.M. on 17. Those women: Marnie Mahler, Magdalena Maleeva, Melanie Marois, Marta Marrero, Magdalena Marszalek, Marion Maruska, Monica Massarella, Maja Matevzic, Melissa Mazzotta, Meredith McGrath, Marlene Mejia, Mariana Mesa, Melissa Middleton, Magda Mihalache, Megan Miller, Maja Mise, Misumi Miyauchi, Marcela Monroy, Magdalena Mroz, Maren Mueller, Marina Muller, and Maja Muric.
